Frankies Foot Longs

In the town of BRISTOL CONNECTICUT on ROUTE 6 there is a place I call HEAVEN... Actually its name is FRANKIES Its a drive in resturant, with all kinds of good food, BUT what I like best is their FOOT LONG HOT DOGS... All the fixings are free, ie mustard, onions, relish, saurekraut. and ketchup... Its about 12 or 15 miles from where I live, so its just a hop, skip and a jump... For $4.49 you can get a foot long, steak fries, cole slaw, and a soda. Thats aBARGIN,,,,

This is what a West Hartford Connecticut traffic officer does to catch the speeding cars on Troutbrook Drive... They asked permission to park the traffic cruiser in our drive way, and we were more than happy to have them here,,

Elizabeth Park Rose Garden Photos

The world famous rose garden is the oldest municipally operated rose garden in the country. It is a two and a half acre garden which has about 800 varieties of roses that amount to 15,000 plants.
Rambling roses cover arched walkways in the garden and the beds are filled with roses of every shape and color. Along the border, fences of climbing and shrub roses provide a colorful background for the bedding plants
.

This is one of my favorite rose photographs.. Not quite in full blossom..

Posted by Marsh

A wall of roses greets you when you enter the park..That gazbo was recently re furbished, and all the vines are growing back again.

Posted by Marsh

By next week all these arbors will have hundreds of full blooming roses on them.. its agreat sight to see...

Posted by Marsh

Some visitors are really knowledgable about the roses.. Every one at one time or another gets to smell the roses..

Posted by Marsh

Another view of the rose gardens. This week end is Rose Week End at the park. Big doings....Hope the weather is good..

You can see the rose arbors in the back ground. Its early yet and not all of the roses are in bloom

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN???????

I wonder how many of the people that read this blog can remember when gasoline was this price???? This photo was taken in Bloomfield Connecticut on Blue Hills Avenue Extention, while I was driving around, and the gas prices are around $3.09 a gallon. I just wanted to prove that the driving habits of the Americans are not going to change.....

The State Capitol Hartford Connecticut

Let me tell you what I like about this photo. This is the State Capitol building, of our state Connecticut, and to me it exemplifies just what a state capitol building should look like. Its impressive, and when you drive up the drive way you know this is part of historic Connecticut.. The people driving up I-84 can see it, also when coming into Hartford on the train there it is welcoming you....Constructed of New England marble and granite and crowned by a gold leaf dome, the Capitol was built at a cost of $2,532,524.43 and has an estimated replacement value of more than $200,000,000.Here is the URL to find out more. http://www.ct.gov/

Red Flamingos every where...

I never found out why all these Red Flamingos were stuck on the lawn of a house in West Hartford, because I went back the next day and they were gone, It reminded me of the Flamingos at the race track in Hialeah Florida. They were a sight to see ..all of them flying around...and then returning... I wonder where these Red Flamingos flew off to...??????

MEET AGNES

MEET AGNES
This photo of AGNES goes along way back.More years than I can remember. Agnes was a SPIDER monkey I bought on a whim, and soon she was part of the family. She ate in the high chair [ not real good table maners], and loved and ate any thing we ate. We had her for about 5 years , because she was quite old when I bought her...At the time we had AGNES we also had a rabbit, and two dogs, so there was always something doing in the house...Agnes used to sit in the front picture window, and wave at people walking by. Talk about double takes.....

ROCKY HILL FERRY

The nation's oldest continuously operating ferry service crosses the Connecticut River between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury. The original ferry, which dates back to 1655, was a small raft pushed across the river using long poles. Under State charter, the ferry service was operated by local families throughout most of its existence.
The ferry service was such a vital transportation link within the region that crossing would cease only during the most adverse conditions.

When river flood levels escalated, the ferry would use alternate landings such as the old coal dock in South Glastonbury, or the ferry operator would skid the craft across inundated meadows to an old dock near Tryon Street.

At one time, a horse on a treadmill in the center of the craft supplied the power to propel the craft across the river. In 1876, the ferry was "modernized" into a steam driven craft. Today's craft is an open flatboat named the "Hollister III". The three-car barge is towed back and forth by the "Cumberland," a diesel powered towboat.

GETTING READY TO BOARD FERRY

There is never a lack of automobiles that use the Rocky Hill Ferry. In this photo the ones from the Glastonbury side are are about to disembark, while the ones in line wait to board.

ALMOST READY TO LEAVE..

All the cars are loaded, and the tickets taken , so the ferry is just about ready to leave. As you see there is a two man crew. The tug pilot and the ticket taker. The ferry only holds 3 autos at a time.

HEADED FOR GLASTONBURY

With all the cars and passengers loaded the Rocky Hill ferry starts its trip across the Connecticut River. There are seats along the side for passengers to sit and look at the scenery...

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CONNECTICUT RIVER

Due to the strong current of the Connecticut River the tug has to make a wide sweeping turn, to be able to get into the landing in Glastonbury..

SAFELY DOCKED ON THE GLASTONBURY SIDE..

After a 5 minute ride the ferry arrives on the Glastonbury side..There is a car waiting to board. I talked to a person that takes the ride just to say he was on the Oldest ferry in the nation. It was a pleasant Saturday after noon and watching part of Connecticuts history

We invited my niece Joan Wendy over for dinner the other night, and she walked in with a huge Hybiscus plant. As soon as I saw a blossom I knew I had to get a photo of it. It is still to cool at night to leave it on the deck, but when the weather warms up it will be a delightful addition on the deck..

Just Stuff From Marsh

Random thought or my experiences.

Monday 5:13pm on a dreary wet and chilly day, and we do have our share of them in New England, Connecticut especially. I spent quite a bit of time reading some of the blogs that Picassa and Hello have. What freaked me out is they have been around since 2003 maybe earlier, but then you had to pay to have one, now they are a freebie. Its amazing when a person isnt talking face to face how they will bare their souls, and say things that they would never say in person. I will take that back, maybe some would, and not regret what they said. I started this blog with not a thing planted firmly in my mind, so its what I call a "MISH MASH" of stuff.. After perusing some of the blogs I found out the early ones lacked photographs. Why I have no idea, because photographs even the bad ones catch the readers eye. All the photographs I have posted in some small way has a story, but at my age its difficult to remember what I had for breakfast let alone what I did a few years ago.. While I am at it , this is a good time to tell you who I think are some of the most intelligent people on this earth are.. In one word "PROGRAMERS" it never ceases to amaze me, every time I sit down at my computer I marvel at what it does. I am sure there are many many people that take for granted all the things that a computer can do. The quickness of what the computer does things [ if one has Broad band] like type a word or phrase into GOOGLE and before you can blink an eye there is a mass of information that would take months to look up in a library. Back in 1994 when I first got first computer, things were a lot different, and in the short time the internet is simplefied to where anybody can use it with the least bit of knowledge. Just stop and think for a moment how computers have enriched your lives, information with just a click, data at your finger tips, and instant messaging to people all over the world. Just think of all the new friends you have made and all the great music you have listened to.....All I can say is "Its AWESOME" ...

On a Saturday morning I was listening to my police scanner, and heard about an accident with a car on a telephone pole guide wire, so off I went. The officer was asking the lady to step on the side walk, so she wouldnt get hurt, as she was looking for her licence.. I found this while going through some of my old photos, and thought it was something special.. this was taken in 1974, using a 120 Rolliflex camera..

This is one of the first photos I had taken for the HARTFORD TIMES news paper.. The girls name is Linn Allison she was 19 years old at that time. This is from a AP wire photo original. Like the plate says IMAQT

Signs of spring..

With the long and dreary winter ended, we now have the first signs of spring. The first daffodil, cold weather pansies.. I can see the buds popping out on the maple trees, good sign. I have seen many Robins listening for the sounds of worms. The wheel barrow will have the pansies until the hot weather, and they will be replaced with Impatients. Amazing how many people walking by, comment on thebeautiful flowers in the beat up wheel barrow, serving another service for many years....

Whiskey barrel planter.. Sturdy and useful..

We must not give up hope that some day it will be that way...
